Well its time.. I have to do it its seriously killing me now and I want to do it before the snow comes specially when I will hopefully be putting a plow on this thing. What steering box should I go with? Should I just go with a normal reman one from my autoparts store or is it worth it and is it really that much better to get a agr box? Also what are the joints on the steering shaft called also that I should replace while Im down in there?
Red-Head Steering Gears, Seattle WA - Red-Head Steering Gears Home is the way I went and it is better than new. After searching here and reading about multiple attempts to get a good stearing box I spent a little more and got a great one the first time. The steering was a little stiff at first but I made no adjustment and it has broken in nicely now. Harvey even made the core return very simple. Read the details on their web site.
Do not get an AGR! I have no experince with the Red Head, but I hear good things. If you want a AGR, I have one you can buy for half price. The other idea I heard on here is to get a junk yard box from a two wheel drive explorer. They wont have much ware. But I repeat, dont get an AGR. The one I have has more slop than a reman from Advance Auto parts that cost half the price!
I found a shop that does nothing but rebuild steering boxes. I used them once and worked out well.
I also broke the sector shaft on my factory box on a four wheel run in Big Bear California on the Fouth of July weekend. Luckly Napa Auto Parts in Big Bear City had a rebuilt in stock! We changed it out on the trail and drove out before dusk. It went right in and perfomes just like it should. Still working good.
The truth of the matter is that there aren't really any significantly better parts available for the OEM box in these trucks. AGR makes a lot of noise about what theirs can do but I have yet to hear anyone be surprised by the performance they get from one. (AGR spends a few hours re-valving them to put a touch more pressure into the high pressure side of the hydraulics which is supposed to help the pump keep up with the fluid demand). A good reman. from a reputable supplier should be just fine.
