69 Rear End

Hey everybody, I have a question. The rear end housing in my 69 F100 has a crack right next to where the hogshead bolts up and I need to replace it. I have the rear end out of a 64 F100 that I would like to use since money is tight and I don't have to pay anything for this rear end. The spring centers on the two are the same, but the shock mount brackets are narrower on the 64 rear end. I'm not concerned with this since if the difference is too much I can weld new shock mounts on the 64 rear end. My only concern is that the measurement from the outside of the spring perch to the inside of the axle flange is slightly different- the 64 rear end is about 3/16" wider on this measurement than the 69 rear end. If I was to use the 64 backing plate and brakes it wouldn't matter, but since I use the truck to haul a lot of heavy loads I would like to use my backing plates and brakes since they are wider. If the bearing seats the same depth into the housing on both of them it won't matter because the only result will be that the axle will be pulled about 3/16" out of the gear, which shouldn't be enough to hurt anything. My question is does anybody know if the seating depth of the bearing into the housing is the same? I'm going to be finding out anyway when I pull them apart, I just figured I'd ask a few questions in advance.

My next question is if anyone knows an easy way to get the wheel seals out of these rear ends? The last time I took them out of mine to replace them when I replaced the wheel bearings it was a royal PITA to get them out, and I had to use a chisel to cut one of them out, which I don't like to do since it is so easy to scar the surface where the seal seats. So I'd love to know if there is an easier way. Thanks in advance for all the help.

i don't know on the depth. as for axle seal removal, pull your axle and hook the very end of a slide hammer or cheap dent puller & pull them out.

1964 (1961/67) F100's have different rear brakes than what was used 1968/72 (1968/79).

1961/67: The rear brakes shoes are 11" x 1 3/4" / 1968/72's are 11" x 2 1/4"

The '68/72 drums are also different as are the axle shafts (1/2" longer) to accomodate the wider brake drums.

The axle bearing and seal are the same: 1957/73.

Thanks y'all. I tore into the 64 rear end and took a lot of measurements and looked up some part numbers and I found out that as long as I use my axles, backing plates, drums, and all of the other brake hardware out of the 69 I can use the 64 housing. The housing is all I really want anyway, I recently replaced the wheel bearings and redid the brakes on the 69, so I want to use those parts anyway, where the 64 rear end has been sitting around on the ground beside of a sawmill. I wouldn't bother swapping anything, but the crack on mine is a little big to suit me, and the rest of the housing isn't in great shape. Plus that rounded pumpkin on the 64 is a lot better looking than the squared off one on the 69. But anyway, I appreciate the help.
