What year Tailgate is this?

Just got my 1st look and drive of the truck I bought in August. It drove from Hou to Austin (3hrs), rides smooth and brakes are good, shifts well, but it has some issues I will be addressing. Carb, engine rebuild, and complete redo of engine compartment

But...maybe I'm wrong but is this the correct tailgate for a 65 F100?

Welcome to FTE

Is this tailgate ^^^ correct?

It is not an original 1964/66 tailgate, it's from a 1967/72.

However...it all depends on how you define the word correct.

^ ^ This one is: C7TZ-9940700-A

Original application: 1967 F100/350 Styleside / The same tailgate was used thru 1972.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1964/66 original: C4TZ-9940700-A = This is the only tailgate Ford installed as original equipment on 1964/66 F100/250 Styleside 2WD's / 1966 F100 Styleside 4WD's.

But, in September 1966, Ford replaced C4TZ-9940700-A with C7TZ-9940700-A as a service part replacement.

Which meant that if your 1964/66 tailgate was damaged or stolen, the only one Ford would sell you is this one: C7TZ-9940700-A pictured above.

So..is it correct or not?

As far as I'm concerned: No, it is not.

The original 1964/66 tailgate does not have that horizontal scallop line at the top center of the 'gate. The 1964/66 F O R D letters are larger.

The 1964/66 tailgate does not have that ovate scallop line around the F O R D letters.

To see what the original 1964/66 tailgate looks like = see FTE member camperspecial65's gallery pics.

btw: That step bumper isn't original, either. It's an aftermarket bumper, not a Ford bumper.

Ford didn't offer a factory step bumper till 1968. The 1968 step bumper (1968/72) looks somewhat similar to this one, but it's not the same.

Don't forget that the letters need to be painted to be correct.

Thanks all. I didn't think it was original equipment. But at this point that is the least important correction that is needed. The tailgate functions well and priorities need to be placed.

BTW, I knew the bumper wasn't correct. In fact I have ordered a new front & back bumper already!

The 1973/79 tailgate also fits 1964/72's, but the hinges have to be modified.

I had read that here, but had never seen one till just recently.

A mangy 1965 F250 Custom Cab with a 73/79 tailgate was parked outside the Ft. Douglas Museum in SLC UT.

btw: Don (camperspecial65) has an extra CORRECT 1964/66 tailgate. I think he's posted it for sale in FTE's classified section.
