My 99 expedtion lately has started idling a little rough. I replaced the plugs about 20,000 miles ago and it has ran great till recently. There are no codes flashing at this time. not sure where to start looking. any advice would be greatly apreciated
The 5.4 has the IAC on top but way at the back near the firewall. It's a tight fit but it can be done.
Disconnect one cable from the battery, take the 2-wire connector off the old IAC valve, take out the two bolts holding the IAC on, clean the mounting surface, install the new IAC along with a new gasket, reconnect the 2-wire connector, reconnect the battery. The engine will run rough for about 10-20 miles as the computer relearns how to control the engine with the new IAC.
check for your head gasket starting to go just had mine go with 100,000 miles with no over heat just went it was running rough for about two weeks before
now i have 2005 with the new 5.4
no was driving home from work stopped at light coming off highway light turned green and went to go started running like crap and blowing white smoke luckily only 1/2 mile from home call two locale shops and it was going to cost $2600.00 to fix
so i traded it in on another newer 2005
great way to check for a vacuum leak i got from a mechanic is to spray wd-40 on your hoses. since air blowing out them (if holes) won't go in and it wont dry right up leaving time to see bubbles from the smallest holes. my sound ghetto but i have used to a time or two to fix my air leaks works really well and never did me wrong.
jonpfeifer: use a piece of garden hose as a stethescope and listen for leaks. Turn off the AC to reduce noise ander the hood. I just spent a day changing all the hoses on my 99, leaks on PVC rubber elbow, and several other cracked hoses. After all that it improved but I still had a small miss at a constant 60mph. #1 coil replaced, runs great now. Most of the hoses I took off were brittle from heat and age, best to replace them all and forget about vacuum leaks for a few years.
