man I had a belt (82 F100...) screeching before I rebuilt the motor. When I got everything back together it was still screeching (like 15 seconds after each startup). So I loosened the alternator and cranked it up, sure enough it is the alternator, not the power steering. the belt looked a little hard so I pulled another out of my garage that fit, and it worked but would screech for about 5 seconds at startup, then it got bad like the other one, so I was back to where I started. Today I bought a NEW belt and I heard it screech for a couple seconds one time in about six startups, and I'm thinking this:
-the new belt is on its way to meeting the fate of the other belts, ie maybe I need to clean the alternator pulley.
anybody got tips on belts..not the serpentine kind?
Feel your alternator after it runs for a few min. Mine was so hot after a couple of min. you couldn't touch it. This has happened twice, so if it is the alternator, buy the better rebuild vs. the "1 yr" warranty job.
Some WD-40 will keep it quiet. I would check your alt. if it's getting hard to spin and causing your belt to slip it wont be long before it seizes. Are you tightening the belt by yourself, perhaps having someone there to help would allow you to tighten in further.
Seriously though, if you have multiple belts and one is squealing, just a little shot of WD-40 will eliminate it long enough to let you identify the bad one without removing them all. It will evaporate/burn off quickly.
