While driving around in 4hi at about 40mph I noticed the front drivers side wheel seemed to uh, squeak a lot when ever I wasn't coasting. Is this normall for a Ford's drivetrain? Also, I have locking hubs, but does anyone know any easy ways to find out if the front differential locks or not, or if there even is a front diff.? I don't really see any point to locking hubs if the differential is just a regular diff., so I'm assuming that it is somehow "locked".
if you have a 4wd, you have a front differential. it may or may not be a locking front diff. you can check by jacking front wheels off ground, rotating wheels and see what rotates.
the hubs unlock to keep from spinning all that steel wwhen you don't need to.
the squeaking only occured in 4x4, and when I was accelerating, or not coasting. Basically if I let off the gas, I wouldn't hear any squeak at all, but the instant I pressed back on the gas pedal, the squeak came back.
Logan, I just replaced all the U-joints in the front end of my F250 for that same thing took care of the problem. when you go into the front end it is better to replace all of the U-joints at once. If you don't you will be back in there again in a couple of months so if you have to change one change them all.

Yep, while your in there check the ball joints, repack the
wheel bearings etc. It's a royal pain to do/or less labor to
pay for if the mechanic already has it tore apart.
Your locking hubs lock your hubs to your axle shafts so that your front wheels can be driven.
It doesn't matter what type of differential drives the axle shafts.

I had a similar prob w/my last truck (2000 250SD SC 4X4 STOCK) at around 16,000 miles w/verly little and light 4x4 use. When I went into 2WD from either 4H or 4L, it would squeal like a dying cat upon accel - then would go away after a minute. Dealer fixed it - replaced all front axle guts. I traded it in at 16,600 miles - not because of that tho.
