I have a 1998 ford ranger 4x4 with the non-limited slip diff. I was thinking about changing out the rear end oil.The owners manual saysYOU MUST add 4oz. of friction modifier when changing the gear lube.I always thought friction modifier was for limited- slip differentials. Why does Ford say this?
If it was my truck I would just opt for fluid already containing FM, such as Amsoil Severe Gear, Redline, or Royal Purple. They're all proven quality fluids.
As to FM in non-slip rear end, I'm not sure. Maybe they're just generalizing?? But still those gear lubes are awesome and highly recommended.
That has to be a misprint in the owners manual. That Ranger should have a Ford 7.5 axle and there is nothing unusual about it. I would caution you about switching to synthetic if it still has the original 20 year old seals. I did get pinion seal seepage immediately after a change to synthetic axle lube on a 1993 GM axle, which had dino as factory fill. Castrol Hypoy C is an excellent gear lube for the money. Chevron Delo gear lube even better, if you can find it, but overkill for light duty applications.
Your 98 Ranger 4x4 has a 8.8 rear end and probable has a LS rear .Check the axle code on the drivers door or tab on the axle itself.
Also the 4oz. of friction modifier will not hurt an open rear.
it says axle code is 96 on the sticker on the side of the drivers door where the vin # is. According to my ford service manual(the 2 thick manuals the dealers use) it says its a 3.73 non limited slip
Okay, finally got to the bottom of this, my owners manual is wrong, according to the service manual the friction modifier is for traction loc rear ends , i confirmed by the tag on my diff . that it is a non limited slip, so it looks like I dont need the FM after all. Thanks for the replies.
