Locker Backlash

Can someone please explain to me what is meant by 'backlash' with a locker?

Locker Backlash

Basically it is the amount of rotation required by the ring gear to overcome all the clearances in the differential and actually turn the side gears/axle shafts. Place your transfer case or transmission in neutral and rotate the driveshaft back and forth by hand with the wheels on the ground, parking brake on. This rotational "slop" is the total rear axle backlash. Some lockers have more backlash than conventional diffs. to allow engagement and disengagement.
