Slow Off The Start

Hello,

I have had my 6.4 for about a month and have not driven it hard at all. On a trip this past week I was driving about 35mph in a 45mph behind a truck, punched it mildly to get around the guy, and heard a lot of pinging noise as I went by. I didn't really think much of it because I assumed it was just the sound of the exhaust bouncing off of the truck I was passing. But now I am noticing that the truck is kinda sluggish until the rpms get up. Since I've never floored it from a dead stop I don't have a comparison, but when I do it the truck crawls for about 3-4 seconds until the rpms get up and the turbo kicks in. I remember the salesmen telling me that one of the turbos was for this purpose. And I remember when I drove it home the first time that it was pretty fast from a dead stop at only half throttle. So it got me to thinking that the noise I heard might have been a turbo failure?

Can anyone else describe how their truck runs from a deadstop when flooring it?

thanks

What you're describing sounds normal. Do you think you were in regen mode when passing? I notice my truck makes more of a racket when in regen mode. Going WOT from a dead stop does seem to increase the "turbo lag". Lower amounts of throttle input improve spool up times.

I'm really thinking this is all just a perception issue. When WOT your brain is really looking for a big kick quickly.

Hi,

I didn't notice if it was in regen mode or not during passing the truck. I've driven it about 2000 miles so far and have yet to notice a regen.

I imagine though that if the low end turbo had went out, I'd see an engine light or something. But I thought that the reason for the dual turbos was to get the boost up quicker at lower rpms.

thx

I think the noise you probably heard is normal as well, mine has a lot of power even in regen mode.

keep in mine this is not a gas motor so it does take a minute to get it going. yes the additional turbo is designed to give a quicker start but primarily to give low end torgue.

Might check to see if you have the latest flash for your pcm. I have a job 3, build date in March 08.

My Job 3 is very lazy from a stop. I am comparing it to my 7.3 and 6.0, not a gasser. Its so bad that my passengers comment on it. Flooring it makes it really bad. Seems they all have a little delay but some are better than others. My dealer has reflashed the PCM already. Its in the shop today getting a new DPF (that they originally told me was fine but 200 miles later pipes were black again) and they claim the new DPF will help with the turbo lag. I seriously doubt it but if I am wrong I will post the good news on here.

i was told last year that ford is aware of this issue and i havent been in a truck that doesnt have it. supposedly there is a reprogramming update that will resolve this concern but will take some time to work out.

Sounds like it's more than a programming update if it's taking them this long. Worrying.

Caprang- how do you like your truck overall? I'm still on the brink of marching onto the lot and writing a check for that black FX4 I've been hankering after for the last two months.

The dual turbos, in my opinion, don't do much for the turbo lag. I don't notice much of a difference at all between my 6.0 and 6.4, although I didn't have my 6.0 very long. WOT launches both seemed to be pretty laggy.

Carl - overall this is the best truck Ford has made. Only 2 complaints. MPG is the worst of any diesel I have ever owned and MPG is half the reason for buying a diesel. 2nd complaint is the turbo lag. Its dangerous in my opinion. I have pulled out in to traffic and the truck just doesnt go causing other drivers to hit brakes and blast horns at me. Outside of those 2 concerns (that nearly every 6.4 owner has) this is a great truck. Both of my concerns can be resolved via SCT or Spartan but I dont have the balz to do it yet. I have been involved in a lemon law deal once before and I cant bring myself to risk the warranty on a $50k+ truck. Every time I fill up or pull out in traffic it gets more tempting though.

Thanks for the thorough response. I've only had a short test drive but even from that the truck felt great. All I was thinking of changing out was the factory front stabilizer for an Icon one and maybe fitting some 15" brakes. How do you find the stock brakes? Like you, I'd be reticent to undermine my engine warranty given it's more than $20k for a new one. However, the SCT and Spartan tunes may be in the future if the regen or DPF issues become problematic after time.

Glad you like your truck overall and hop to be able to post pics of my own in the near future.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I looked at the door sticker and it's got 10/07 on it. So it is one of the earlier builds I guess. I think I will take it in to the dealer.

yes I think that is a job one, so let least get the pcm flashed so that you get the latest programing that may help with mileage, regen and the turbo lag.

10/07 is a Job 2.

Does Job 2 mean it probably already has the latest flash? Currently mileage is great, about 14 around town and 18 on the interstate. No regen issues that I have noticed. Only the turbo lag is a little excessive I think.

Great truck though; I'd hate to have the dealer fiddle with it and make things worse.

thx
