So about 2 months ago my truck started making a terrible almost grinding noise when I tried starting it, and it won't crank over when it does this. I turn the ignition a couple times it makes the noise and eventually it starts up. I then dropped the pennies and got a new starter for it, and installed it. Same problems. I doesn't do it every time, but it's becoming more frequent. Whats the gear the starter engages on? I think the teeth are stripped and the starter is just grinding on that. I failed to check it out when I put in the starter. It's the only thing I can think of that would cause this. Unless anyone else has any ideas.
My 88 does that occasionally, I would say flywheel ring gear. Are you sure the starter is on right, the bolts aren't loose, they are in the right hole? Sometimes these starters may go on with all the holes rotated around one, then its not aligned right.
Well I'm gonna pull the starter today to checkout the flywheel ring gear. And then I'll see if the starter is on correctly. I just thought you unbolt the old, and bolt up the new. How much will a new ring gear cost, and how hard will it be to replace?
Well I put my Destination M/T's on today and while I was at it, I tore the starter off, and looked at the flywheel ring gear and it's all chewed up. Anyone know of an inexpensive, or cheaper place to find one? And what is intaled in installing it? I'm gonna have to drop the tranny aren't I?
so I called the tranny guy today and he quoted me $400 labor, and the price of the flexplate tacked on top of that. I don't don't think i have the facilities to accomplish the task at my house. Sound reasonable?

I'd go that route. I paid $400 a few years ago for my F250 460 5 Speed, same issue. I'm not sure how that ring is attached .. pressed on I guess.
