I bought a Lincoln for the engine and it happen to have a 9" with disk brakes under it. Is this worth rebuilding or what. I want to run at lest 38.5", Im running 35" now. Someone told me that if you break an axletube your tire will come all the way off.

86 Bronco dead 302 but soon to be very Much Alive 460.
if you break an axle tube? how the h*ll will you do that? i think you friend is thinking of a chevy rearend and breaking the axle shaft. if that happens kiss your wheel goodbye. but on a ford i have never heard of someone breaking their axle tube. if you break the axle you can still drive home assuming you are running a locker. there is probably a good chance the rearend on your truck is a 9" already.

i think his friend is referring to the 8.8 axle with the c-clip. and yes, your friend is right, only the axle housing isn't what breaks, it's either the axle shaft itself or the c-clip that holds the axle in the diff. and if either one of those break, then the wheel will come out.
You should have an 8.8 axle under your Bronco. I think the last year for the 9" in a Bronco (or anything for that matter) was 80 or 81. That axle would be a great swap ifBig If)
It is long enough
It has the correct bolt pattern, I've seen some with 5x5.5 and some with 5x4.5 the latter is the car pattern and that will mean you will need to get new axles and find some rotors(?) so it may not be worth it.
Many people just adapt the disc setup to a truck 9".
It is definately worth rebuilding. If you really don't want it you could sell it for a mint to any vintage mustang enthusiast. Those things are like the Holy Grail for old stang guys. Go to www.vintage-mustang.com and I gaurantee some one there will ****** that thing right up for a good price.
thats too funny, my buddy has a 96 bronco with 38.5's on it with the 8.8 in the rear. he tried to power brake it and blew out the rear end, so we swapped in a 9". unfortunately this was the worst thing we could of done. he has a 302 in it and we had to replace the gears cause they blew out. in 3 weeks. it chewed up u-joints about one a week so we got rid of the 9" and got another 8.8 and just lowered the gears. that was our problem but i figured i would give you my $.02. good luck
If you have the 8.8 and are worrying about losing a wheel should you snap an axle shaft or C-clip--gee, that all the excuse you need to go buy a rear disc brake conversion! Never mind it'll stop a lot better, the rotor/caliper won't let that wheel escape!
