Wink

Why does everyone want to install larger tires???? unless you have a 4X4 and the need to go off roading then leave the stock size on your truck it will handle much better!!

I disagree.

The stock 265's that came on my truck provided near zero traction in wet or gravel conditions causing skidding while turning on DC surface streets and heavily traveled highways. Accelerating was an issue also in the same or lesser conditions. While I believe going to a 35" tire is overkill for the street, a larger (marginally taller/wider) tire can be beneficial to any rig.

Well I wont necessarily argue against that but I wouldnt be exclaiming that without even knowing what willy_scott's intentions are... maybe he is building a show truck? Maybe he is going off roading? Perhaps he should have given us some more info.

And as far as I am aware the 5.4 has always been the standard motor on a 1 ton with duals.

But to properly answer the question we need some more info on the truck like model year, and what wheels it came with.

FWIW, if you go over a 255mm width you'll want to install a spacer between the rear duals to prevent them from rubbing together under heavy load.

I'm not sure what the duals come with, but mine are 16x7. I have the optional 265 tires on them and am happy. I've heard of people going as high as 315's on the stock 7" wide rim. They will fit on the rim, but you will notice (very soon) that you will wear down the center of the tread very fast as you have curved the tire to fit it onto such a narrow rim. Many tire websites have recommended tire widths for rim sizes. I can't remember off the top of my head but I think Procomp is one of them. If I go any wider (I'm thinking my next set is going to be 285/75/16) then I will buy a new set of wheels that are around 8" wide to get the best traction and maximum life out of them.
