Transmission Tips or Tricks?

I'm reinstalling the transmission on my '86 ranger. The cab is off so I have 360 access, but as I tighten the bolts, the connection between the torque converter and the flex plate seems too snug. When I removed the transmission, the torque converter was rather loose in the bell housing once the four nuts were removed. I'm working on uneven ground and fear the torque converter has slipped. Any tried and true tips to immobilize the converter as you wrestle it into alignment with the engine? I was thinking of a wedge that could then be removed through the little access port at the rear of the oil pan.

Thge converter should be installed into the transmission that in fact when you get the transmission case bolted up you can spin the converter as it will be back away from the flex plate. Seems to me that perhaps you don't have it pushed all the way into the pump
before you start. I'd say that the convertor if instlled properly is maybe 3/16 of an inch away, you'll have to pull it foreward to start the bolts. kotzy

I agree with kotzy.

You may have to remove your transmission again and get your TC back in there. Also be sure to put new seals on/etc. Once it is in there it should stay put unless you really move it around alot.

That's kinda what I thought. I did replace the seals. Think I'll build a ramp going slightly uphill then tilt the engine down to meet it. Thanks for the comments and help.
