diesel engine swap
Tried a search but no results, hence this post. I'm not genuinely familiar with the Rangers, except that it is a Ford so it must be a sound truck. I also know that there were some (few) with diesels, so I'm hoping to find a dead Ranger with good drivetrain and chassis/body for a diesel swap candidate. Has anyone ever tried a diesel swap or know of one?

The engine most commonly used in the Ranger was the Mitsubishi 4d56 turbo diesel. Look it up on ebay there's a few of them for sale every now and then. I thought about doing the swap in my '86 but parts are hard to find for diesel rangers.

What other parts would be needed. just get the engine/tranny, right? They don't have ECU controlled injection, it's mechanical right?
I'm looking for any 4X4 that has a diesel 'option', like the Mitsu MightyMax (or Ford Ranger or Dodge D50) or an Isuzu P'up, or the actual diesel version if I can find it cheap enough.

Yes the injector pump just needs 12v to run it, then your normal things like oil press and coolant. The trans from a gas engine should work unless the input shafts are different, not sure on that one. Those trucks with the diesel option are going to be hard to find simply cause everyone else is doing the same as you. I wish these retard manufacturers would get on the ball and start building little diesel pickups again. They would not be able to keep them on the lot!!!!!!

or you could do like another young guy i have heard of did... he took a 98 ranger... and put in a 4cyl turbo diesel CUMMINS in it...heavier rear end and tranny... talk about sweet.... YouTube - Cummins Terror
