I am running 33" tires, 285/85-16 mud tires on my 86 4x4.
No rubbing at all.
Are you sure they are only 33", I run 255/85R16s on my Dodge and three different manufacturers tires have been 33-34"
I've never ran 285s but I'd think they out to be 35" or so tall.
I'm guessing carter442's 33" tires are wider (33-12.5?) which would explain the rub. The 85 A.R. tires we're running are pretty narrow.
Have you ever actually measured them?
I've found actual tire size to vary a lot from what it's supposed to be.
Anyway, my 255s have always actually measured slightly over33" up to 34"
Depends mostly on the tread pattern.
Mud tires usually run taller, straight treads are usually the shortest and all terrains fall in the middle.
When I buy a set of tires, if the dealer has 8 or 10 tires, I try to get a matched set.
And yes, same manufacturer, same product line, same size tire, I have seen almost an inch difference in tire height.
I can't believe they would let the tires get that out of spec., that's terrible!
I've noticed the same "size" tires will be a lot different from manufacturer to manufacturer but an inch difference from tire-to-tire is rediculous.
I don't think I'll measure every tire of a set or I might get PO'd!
I've always ran mud tires until recently and your right, they do tend to run larger in diameter.
I think they run the same "carcass" for the same family of tires and just "add" the tread to it and since the tread is deeper on mud tires obviously they would be larger in diameter.
Since I have limited slip in both ends, I try to match mine as close as possible.
And so far I have not had any store give me a bad time about wanting to compare tires and pick the closest match tires if they have a couple extras in stock.
I guess dropping 8 or 9 hundred for a set of tires makes them willing to try and make me happy.
I just say, hey I have limited slip in both axles, I want a matched set of tires.
We line up 8 or so tires, and I pick the 4 closest ones.
I would expect NOT to be able to find a "measurable" difference between a set of tires. As I said I've always assumed they would be closer than that.
If I knew someone around here that "shaved" tires I would have it done.
I guess you don't want them all shaved to match in diameter, you might end up with one that's virtually bald.
