I have a f100 that needs an engine and have a chance at getting a 370 for 50 bucks. I was wondering if any of the parts are interchangeable between a 429 or 460 or if the parts are hard to find for it since i will be rebuilding it. So is this a good buy or should i just look for a 429 or 460 instead?
not much is interchangable even though they are basically the same engine, block has a much smaller bore and supposedly you can't over bore them enough to meet the stock 429/460 bore although the one I have played with did have thick enough walls to allow for that. The cranks have the bigger front snout of the industrial 429 but without the advantage of being a forged steel crankshaft, the rods are shorter then the 429/460s, the intakes will cross over but really not worth and even the front covers won't work, about the only thing that is of any crossover value is the heads.
About the only parts from a 370 that are usable for a 460 might be most of the bolts (but not all) and the rocker arms and valve covers...and that's about it as far as shared parts are concerned. They 370's do come with a nice full-length big truck (commercial) oil pan but it cannot always be used on light truck or passenger car vehicles.
The 370 heads are essentially useless, in that they have the tiniest valves of any 385 Series engine (1.94" intake and 1.50 exhaust), and that's only the beginning with the heads, although this should be enough to steer most people away from them.
Starting with a 370 and trying to make a decent engine is not a good idea. Get a 460 core and start there instead.
Where are you located? Im thinking of buying a truck with a 429 that has less than 5k on the engine. I dont need the motor, I just want everything to convert mine to an automatic.
Thanks for the answers. I am going to hold off on the engine and look for a 460 or 429 and roxndirt64 I live in Georgia that's a pretty good distance from Wyoming. Thanks anyways!
