What markings are on your hubs? If they are stock, then they should have an auto/lock selector. The ESOF system is prone to troubles, air leaks being the most common. The hubs work off of a vacuum system the if any of the vac. lines leak, the hubs will not automaticly pull in. Many of use have switched out the OEM for aftermarket like Warn or others.

Theres only IMO a few things you can hurt by leaving your hubs in. 1 Fuel mileage, 2 Inner axle seals, at the differential. Now with your fuel mileage may not notice too much a change, not all do, and the inner axle seals usually are getting close to rotted by this day in age anyways, so its not like your going to cause major damage. The truck was meant to be able to drive in 4wd, its not like its a sin. These are just the wear items.
