I've just got an 1988 f350 w/ 7.3 IDI. The problem I'm having is the engine cranks fine for about two seconds and then stops, almost like it's sticking. I attempt to crank it 3 to 4 more times but it just clicks. Around the 4th or 5th time it will turn over and starts after about 10 seconds. I just replaced the positive battery cables and batteries. The starter doesn't look that old, but who knows. I appreciate any help.
You should have a starter relay on the passenger side fender. The next time the starter just clicks bridge the two large terminals on the relay, if the engine cranks then replace the relay. If starter still does not crank check the wire from the relay right to the starter, make sure it is tight at the starter and check other wiring connections at starter. Check that all ground wire connections are clean and tight. Hope this helps.
I've been watching for that, but haven't noticed any of those issues. My brother's truck had that and found it to be a pin hole leak in the cylinder wall allowing coolant to leak in. I'm hoping that's not the problem. It seems to have stopped doing this but now it wants to shut off when braking or with medium to hard accelerating. Then it cranks but doesn't want to restart. WTF?
