anyone had any luck with the equus 3145 code reader on our trucks. (86 5.0 efi) I see it has a optional wireing harness that you can get with it. Do you have to have it, is it worth buying? I can't beleive I am finally giving in to the modern age and thinking of buying a computer to help me work on my truck. You guys help convince me I do or dont need this!!!
Your truck will take the simple type reader you can get for $20-$30. But I use a meter to read the codes. I see in the other post you use a testlight, which is just as good. Buying a fancy code reader is not going to help much on your older truck. If you have any vehicles 96 and newer, you have to have a reader for those, and you probably could get a cable for that reader to fit your truck.
You don't really need it, it's just more for convenience than anything. It's nicer to have the on/off switch, so you can better control the KOER, (Key on Engine Running) test proceedure. Also a wiring harness extention would be nice so you can do the test from inside the truck. This is because during the KOER test, you might be prompted to step on the brake, push the eccelerator to the floor, and turn the steering wheel, etc... (Depending on year and application).
Will keep you from running back and forth from the cab to the engine compartment to check the codes, and do the proceedures. This is because our truck do not have a light on the dash, like the newer ones do.
But it is only for convenience, not really required.
