yesterday morning i drove my truck out to get some gas and it started right up, i drove out to the gas station and filled up my tank. When i got back in my truck i went to start it and it turned over once and then just stopped and headlights all died. At first i thought it shorted out and i blew a fuse so i pulled the cover and all the fuses were good, but when i opened my door the interior light relay started clicking and lights blinking like it was getting power and then the power would just cut out. Checked everything else out...disconnected and reconnected the batteries and tried again just to get the same results...tried to jump it and it would start right up, but as soon as the cables were disconnected it would just shut down again. since i didnt want to have to leave it there over night we towed it back to my school with my buddies explorer.
I havnt had time too look at it again until today and i think my battery it just completely dead. Has anyone ever had this happen to them and do you think changing the battery will fix my problem?
The battery is dead. So you have to know how it died. Either the alternator is fried or the battery just died on its own.. Running voltage across battery around 14.5 volts.
Thats on a fully charged battery..If you see anything below say 13.2 your alt is not charging properly. I would charge battery and check...
I would say that the battery is bad, but I would deffently think something is wrong with the alt. too. The alt should be able to keep the truck running once it is jumped off if it is good. take the battery to autozone have it checked. If bad get a new one, but be sure you check the alt. too. if it is bad you will just kill anouther battery.
Alright thanks guys. my truck would stay running if i revved it up to about 2500 rpms. How long does an alternator last cause i just put a new one in 2 years ago?
just depends. I have seen alternaters that lasted less than a year before, I have put in alt. after alt. trying to use rebuilds from autozone. I think at one point I put on like 4 different rebuilt alt from autozone before I finnaly found one that was good. That is why I dont recomend using autozone rebuilt alts. I dont know maybe it was just bad luck, but at least I got paid to c/o the alt every time when it didnt work. =)
