Speedometer needle stops then starts????

I have just recently had this problem with my truck. I would be driving for maybe 5 mins, and all of a sudden the speedometer needle will drop to zero for a couple of seconds, then shoot right back to regular speed. It will happenen every 10 mins and it seems to be at speeds of 40mph and over. Also, the engine revs seem to rise when it does this. No fault codes so I am really lost. Anyone any ideas???????

Sounds like the rear end may be going to go out on you.
Pull out the VSS sensor (it breaks very easy) and see if it has junk on it.
If it does you have rear end bearings or gear problems.

Thanks Bill, I popped out the vss and took it completely out. On the part thats shaped like a star that goes inside the rear end, there was a little gear oil on it but it wasn't completely covered.
About 6 months ago i had a problem and i thought the tranny was going out. I would be driving and the OD button woud start flashing and the truck wouldn't shift. I got a code about a bad speed sensor so brought it to the mechanic who charged me $150 to put a new one in. I didnt know how easy it was to take care of. Anyway, it has been fine since then.
If it is rear end or gear probs, how big a job is that?
Thanks, Shane

I cleaned the oil and placed the VSS back in and for now it is working. I dont knowv if this will be just a temporary fix but I am keeping my fingers crossed the problem is solved!!!

The VSS sensor very seldom goes bad, it can get junk stuck to it and when you wipe it off it is good to go.

Another thing that can cause your problem is the wiring from the sensor to the dash.

The ABS module and the PSOM can go bad but I would not think that the problem would come and go.
