Starter motor interference
On a 87 F-250 300ci w/ C6 auto, there seems to be interference or contact from the starter to the flex plate ring gear when the engine is running. Someone has replaced the flex plate and starter and installed shims to increase the spacing, but the starter motor has failed again. Is there any other possibility other than the torque converter not being fully engaged in the front pump to cause this problem? The trans works perfectly even when the flex plate is grinding into the starter motor. I posted on the trans. and drivetrain forum as well, but I need some expert advice quickly. Thanks!

.I have ran into this problem before in my business( Starter & Alternator rebuild shop).What we discovered was the thrust main bearing was worn out in the engine.This will let the crank move forward and backward and cause the flywheel to come in contact with starter.Take you a small bar and see if you can move the crank from front to rear.chances are this is your problem.With the 300--6 cyl this was a common problem.
