I have a 82 F150 4x4 5.0L with 33x12.50x15 tires and 3:0 gears front and rear with a BW-1345 transfer case and a 3" lift I want to put a 2" body lift in and and run 35x12.50x15 tires. with the current setup it actually doesn't do to bad off-road everything i point the truck at it has overcome with out a problem. But if I put the 2' body lift in and the 35's I am worried about the current gear ratio's and what will happen when I go off-road with the new set-up. Another question I have is am I wrong thinking my truck came with a Ford 9" rearend or did it come with an 8.8" rear end
AZ, try these links to get an idea how changes in tire size affect performance. It looks like 35" tires would be the same as reducing the axle ratios to 2.83.
W/ an 82 I believe you still have a 9". The easiest way to tell is to look at the back of the axle. An 8.8" will have a removable cover where a 9" will not. W/ 35's and 3.0 gears your truck will be a dog on the street. Throwing it in low range will help drastically off road and you will probably be alright, as long as you aren't doing some major rock crawling or other really slow speed stuff. Seriously, w/ 35's I'd really consider swaping to at least a 3.50 gear; a 3.70 will make life alot easier on the street. I have a 3.50 gear now w/ 35's and a fairly stout 390. My truck feels strong on the street but I can tell it's fighting the gears. I'd go 3.70's if I were you; 4.10's if you have an overdrive.
Go with 4.10's. Bigger or smaller they're a good median in gear ratios. With 35's, you won't be happy with 3.55's; and 4.56's will sacrifice on-road speed. You've got a 9", but you might only have 28 spline axles.
An 82 should have a 31 spline 9", mine does....
With 35's, you'll want something in the low threes, maybe 3.73, or maybe even 4.10's. My 3.55's and 31x10.50's are a near perfect match for my 300.
