broncoman85, how did run 44's on a welded dana 44 without snapping axleshafts all the time (or did you)? just curious on how it all help up.
the good thing about welding spider gears together is that the welds will break before the axle shafts will. and just because someone runs 44's, doesn't mean they'll break something. it's true the bigger tires put more stress on drivetrain componets, but it's not an automatic for breakage. i've seen more breakage from 33's and 35's than i have with 40's and 44's.
as far as a locked front end goes, unless your into serious rock crawling, i wouldn't worry about it.

It depends on the quality of the weld versue the quality of the axle, so its not a given. But I'm nitpicking because typically yea, the weld will give first. But what I'm responding to is it sounds to me like you're saying there is more of a breakage issue on dana44s with 33s as compared to 44s. What the hell? Unless you drive like a granny in the mud and rocks you WILL blow a dana44 shod with 44s, its a matter of time. I've seen front 60s blown with 44s. You've really got push it to tax a dana44 wearing lil' old 33s. Or is it you just haven't seen many guys on the 44s as compared to the 33s? Pass what your smoking '84

I was going to put a carierless locker in my front 44, but i was told it would not be strong enough for hard core wheeling with 35s, i was told i needed a Detroit Locker, but those suckers are like $500. So i decided to weld the sucker. When i first drove it locked up with the hubs in i knew that i needed power steering ASAP. It drove all right in the dirt (never have tried pavement with both hubs in), it just wore my arms out in a hurry. I converted to power steering and now it drives great on dirt with the hubs locked in, just like before it was locked, only it does not turn as sharp. 3 wheel drive with one hub locked in is a realy bad, and unsafe in my opinion. On the gas it pulls hard one way, and off the gas it pulls hard the other way. I always lock both hubs in together.
