Evening Cliff.... I have for myself, but in my parents case, it would have to be a electric version and the required amperage for a unit exceeds the service that they have coming into their house.
They also have an off peak meter that allows them to heat the hot water during the night when rates are cheaper and they do not use more than about 40 gallons of hot water a day.

I understand. Have you picked one out yet?

I am looking at available supply at Lowe's and Home Depot.

I am leaning towards a Whirlpool 50 gallon, Energy Smart heater with a 9 year warranty for $379 which appears to be pretty much in line with the GE's that HD have.

Cool that sounds good.Do you plan to put a timer on it so it will only run when they need it?

Ouch, the tankless that I would need for my setup is around $1300 without the vent piping. Gotta see if it can be power vented seeing that I do not have a chimney. My current WH uses 2" PVC pipe for fresh air and exhaust through the side of the house.

The off peak meter has a timer in it so that it only runs at night. If they need hot water during the day, they can throw a switch on the electric box to supply power to the heater.

Actually Cliff I just did a google search on the Bosch unit that Lowe's sells and I can get it online for $1049 and it is another $250 for the vent kit. According to what I was just reading, a 20 yr. life can be expected so taking that into consideration, it would cost about $65 a year or about $0.18 a day.
I would think that it would pay for itself within a few years.
