high mileage

2001 F150 4.6L 4x4. I'm wondering how long a truck with 190,000 miles (310,000 km) would last if used for pulling a camper. The trucks in good shape but the mileage concerns me.

No one can tell you a specific mile but the tranny will go out much sooner than later.

If you change the tranny fluid regularly, and install a better tranny cooler, you should be fine.

If properly maintained, it should still last quite awhile.

In my book, that is really not that high of mileage either. My latest vehicle is up there, but might be by the end of the year. Maintenance goes a long was, the truck is only as old as you let it be.

If well maintained and babied that should be nothing but if nothing was done to it and it was abused it may be a concern but these year of trucks seem to go forever without doing work to em if any but depends

I wouldnt be too worried about the miles. As long as that truck was taken care of its got at least another 100,000 left in it.
What would worry me for pulling a camper is the fact that it has a 4.6L in it. That engine is fine for just general driving but its a bit underpowered for towing a camper.
For towing, I wouldnt want anything less than a 5.4L.

One thing you can do is change the gears so it's easier on the truck. Check to see what your gear ratio is. If it's a 3.55 you can go 4.56. I have a 4.88 with stock size tires. I also replaced the factory trans cooler with a Hayden unit that has an electric fan and a variable temp controller. I used to see 190* with the stocker but haven't seen over 160* since the new one was put on. The cooling fan doesn't even come on now.

I'm pushing for 400,000 on my truck and will pull what ever I need within reason. Uses hardly no oil, starts like new and will go where ever I need, no leaks.
4.6 is a great engine if it's been taken care of

I wouldn't waste money on a tube and fin cooler. For towing I use a B&M plate cooler, much better heat exchange, smaller and lighter, and in most cases, less expensive. It does not have/need a fan, its heat exchange efficiency is nearly double that of a tube and fin cooler.

I wont disagree with you that a 5.4 would be nicer for towing, but in all honesty, a 4.6 liter gets the job done just fine. I have towed nice big loads with my old 4.6 liter, and all i had to do was slow down more lol.

The 4.6 is really a great little engine, if thats all you have, or can afford, it will work fine (but not quite as nice as a 5.4)

The 4.6L is absolutely a good engine, its just a little bit underpowered.
