Found an oil well!

I think I found an oil well in my old truck. I bought this truck as a project about a year ago and between a broken foot, a tornado and two hurricanes haven't had any time to work on it.

Saturday I rebuilt the carb and gave it a tuneup. Its running great. Since the engine was all warmed up I decided to go ahead and change the oil. I drained 3 GALLONS out of a 302!

There's no water or anti-freeze in it and it didn't smell like gasoline. The viscosity seemed about right for dirty oil at operatimg temperature. I have no idea (other than rank stupidity) how that much oil got into the engine. Perhaps it was filled by the same gorilla that installed the oil filter. (I was beginning to think it was welded on.)

Anyway, the oil pressure is where it should be and the truck runs fine. Another unsolved mystery, for now.

Something fairly similar happened to me about a year ago:

I also couldn't really detect a gasoline smell in the oil, I thought perhaps synthetic oil
somehow neutralized the smell. Regardless, it wouldn't surprise me if this was the case
with your truck.

Thanks CT. That was a very helpful thread. I'll be pulling the pump soon. This thing hasn't been tagged since '04 so there's a real good chance the diaphagm in the pump is shot.

Maybe the PO thought it was diesel and needed that much oil. It always surprising to see how auto-inept some people can be. My friend had one guy tell him that fuel injected motors dont have spark plugs.

I have heard that people "fill" the motor up with oil after they know know the project car/truck is going to sit a while. Keeps everything from rusting or locking up. Just need to remember to drain it before trying to crank it

My buddy had an old charger that was sitting, tried to crank it after about a yr...boy was he tripping out..lol
