PTO...winch

I have been wondering about something. I have a 78 F250 4x4 heavy duty, with NP435 granny gear trans, coupled with an NP205 t-case. The t-case has a PTO (power take off) on it. I've never messed with one before, but am seriously considering using it to power a hydraulic winch. It also has something that caught my eye. The box next to the PTO (the selector I assume) is marked DANA, is red, and looks to be non-original. This confused me, seeing a DANA part on a New Processing t-case. So my questions are: 1) how hard is it to install a hydraulic winch set-up with the PTO? 2) Will it be more expensive to fully install than an electric winch? 3) And whats the deal with the DANA part on my NP205? THANKS......Ben

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Dec-01 AT 05:05 PM (EST)]Usually a hydraulic winch is run off the power steering pump, it simply doesn't need the capacity that a PTO driven hydraulic pump gives you. Milemarker describes this setup on their website. A PTO hydraulic pump is not gonna be cheap, that's for sure. A few grand or so. Plus the PTO box you gotta come up with to drive it off the tranny or transfer case. Not sure about what you're describing on your transfer case, but a PTO isn't much for parts. Just a couple gears that engage to the tranny/transfer case, an output shaft, and splined clutch that engages the output shaft when you pull the lever or cable. So all you're looking for is a little box with an output shaft way too small to attach a driveshaft to, and either a cable or lever going into it.

I'll check out Milemarkers site. But the box I described has 3 levers on it, but no linkage. There is a shaft too, but it's the output shaft for the PTO, coming out of the t-case.

You might try finding a late '70s tow truck or car hauler. Most of them have PTO winches. It might be cheaper than just trying to find the necessary parts.

Most Hydro winches are about the same price as a electric winch so it's probably going to cost more to set one up. You might consider using the PTO with a mech winch, all you need is a shaft and connect it to a mech winch.

I got my PTO from a dump truck and it used a shaft to connect to a hydro pump and a HUGE hydro cyl for lifting the bed, I'm looking into having a mech winch made to attach to the shaft.
