2001 Ford E-150 4.2L TDC

I'm new at this so excuse any mistakes, I recently replaced my camshaft sensor & synchronizer (P0340). I have the proper allignment tool but I'm having a problem finding TDC beford I insert the new part. There appears to be no timing scale anywhere around the crankshaft damper. There is no timing line on the damper only a symbol of zero which I assume is to line it up with a timing scale if there was one there. I have removed #1 sparkplug and used a plastic straw to determine TDC. I set the synchronizer at 54 degrees and it did line up with my old marks on the housing. However after reassembly of the engine and driving for 30+ miles I end up with error code P1309 which basically says the camshaft synchronizer is not alligned properly. So now I have dissambled everything again but I am at a loss as to how to line this thing up correctly to TDC. I have a Haynes manual but it only shows how to line up with a timing scale present. I have also ordered Ford manuals but they are yet to arrive. Any help would be appreciated. fogg5@comcast.net
