stuck drum

Howdy. I am trying to pull the right rear brake drum from my 92 ranger with the 9" brakes and long story short, the hold down pin came loose and thus the hold down spring also came off. So thus when I try to pull the drum off, the shoe sticks to the drum and well, the drum won't come off. The whole assembly just stretches due to the springs on the shoes. Any suggestions about how to get the drum off without ruining it?

Thanks

Eric

Sometimes they can be a real "bugger". Often times the shoes wear a ridge in the drum. Make sure that you back the adjustment off first. There is a rubber plug in the back of the brake plate. Remove the plug and work through the hole. You have to use a thin screwdriver or some other type tool to hold the adjuster arm from the star wheel. I'm not sure which side is which, but one side has backward threads. Back the adjustment off and the drum should come off. If your hold down pins are rusted off, I would check the rest of the hardware real close and replace what ever else is rusted. Good luck.

I have used a large 3 jaw puller to rip the drum off. keep in mind that you will probably have to replace the wheel cylinder if you use this method. maybe as a last resort

did you get it off? on the backing plate there should be a rubber plug at the bottom. If you remove it there is a star wheel behind it that you can use to un-adjust the brakes(first lift up metal tab that holds it from rotating backwards) and rotate it. One way it will make the shoes tighter, the other way will loosen them. good luck.

After going blind looking at the adjuster thorugh the tiny hole with my head knocking the jack stand, I managed to figure out which way loosened the shoe but the secondary shoe was still stuck. I got enough room to get a screw driver in there and then hammer the shoe off. Sometimes, actually often, it just comes down to a bigger hammer.

Thanks
Eric
