Just pulled the diff cover off to see what was making the clunking sound to find my spyder gears minced!!! I have a 3.55 posi what is the best way to fix this???
Replace the spider gears.. that's the most cost effect thing to do, you could probably pull them from a junkyard truck for minimal cost. The disassembly would go something like this..
Remove rear cover and drain fluid.
Remove pinion pin lock bolt.
Remove pinion pin.
Remove S spring.
Remove clutch packs.
Remove axle C-clips and push axles out about 3-4".
Remove spider gears and replace with "new".
Reverse the order for assembly.
A couple notes...
The axles have to be pushed in before you can remove the C-clip.
The smaller spider gears have to come out first, if you grab 1 and pull it will rotate the large gears in place, use the same type manouver to insert the new gears.
The clutch packs should be examined and restacked. The stock stack puts pairs of steel plates together, change this so the plates alternate steel-friction-steel-friction and the diff will perform better. Use the plates you collect from the JY diff or a rebuild kit to add the extra friction plates.
