Knock, knock, knock....

'97 Expedition with a 5.4 engine. Changed the oil yesterday. Not knowing if this is the norm but the oil filter is remotely mounted behind the bumper, drivers side. He tried to take the filter off, could get it to move. We then savagely attacked it and got it off. It was on tighter than anything I have ever seen. It took all his strength and a 20" pair of water pump pliers.

Got it all back together, looked fine. Drove 120 miles or so, no trouble. Started it this morning and it was knocking. He checked the oil and most of it was gone. The oil filter was wet, the under carriage is dry. Now if it leaked out that bad, the tire and everything underneath would be soaked. Not the case. Filled it up with 5 qts or so, still knocking. HE says the knock sounds like it is coming from the intake area. Oil pressure is fine, always has been.

Any ideas? He's 120 miles from here otherwise I would run over myself.

If the old filter was stuck on there that hard there is a good chance that the old gasket is still on the filter base which will cause the new filter to leak.

Nope, it came off with the Pennzoil filter, believe it or not. I figured it would be flat as a copper washer.

what filter do you have on the truck now? some filters cause alot of engine noise due to their design. if this occured all of a sudden after a oil change then you can hope is it something that simple.

Seems to be that this is a common occurrence with a Triton engine....lovely. Cost him $600 to have it repaired.

So he blew a plug and didn't know it and kept on driving? The repair doesn't cost $600 but driving it and running it out of oil can cost more than that. It is not a common occurence with the Triton engine but if it happens to you, it will not make your day.

From what I have read, it seems to be common. A company even make a kit specific for the "Triton issue". ++ Ford Spark plug Repair ++.

He didnt keep driving it. He noticed it after he was home, next time he started it it happened. My mistake, no oil was lost. Yes, the repair cost $600. The dealer here in tiny town Montana has done 5 of them this year, his was 6 and the one that came in this afternoon makes 7.
