I removed my heads before realizing I was supposed to keep track of the pushrod placement. I do know the "sets" to each cylinder, but I don't know 1)which rod is intake and which is exhaust 2)what is the upside (rockers) and the downside (lifters).
Observations: Each set of two rods contains one that is discolored on 1/2 of the rod. The other rod is discolored from top to bottom.
and finallly....to be perfectly honest, I am not 100% sure that the sets are correct. There is a chance that a rod I labeled cyl4 actually came out of cyl3.
All the rods, lifters and rockers look really good. I understand the I should have been more careful but am I freaking over very little possibility.
well each rod galls into the socket in a certain way. this is not a splayed valve engine
(unless I missed a set of heads) therefore I=E length wise.
you can get a new set, or have the ends polished and use assembly lube and put em back together. any chance you have guide plates that the robs might brush near to get discoloration to indicate top/bottom?
You didn't mention what engine this is.. but the pushrods should all be the same length so unless they are visibly worn you can put them back anywhere you want. I'd suggest cleaning them and blowing them out with compressed air first. If they are worn you should get a new set.
Thanks. The motor is a 5.8L The wear looks nonexistant though I really don't know what existant wear would look like. I'll go your suggested route of clean and install. Thanks again.
I think I might have figured it out. All the rod have the same slight wear mark on one end. I'm assuming it the rocker end because the lifter end completely surrounds the pushrod tip. Sound good?
You will be fine. I think I put mine in either way, they are the same on both sides. The rod will be cleaner where it goes through the head, so that might help you out some, try to match it to the color of the head or the block.
