im yankin my dads 300, ive juggled around a 408 stroker, but it will cost wayyy too much for what im gonna use it for. My question is; do i keep my c6 from my 302 or do i yank that 3spdOD that came in the light duty f150's? (aluminum case, the name/brand escapes me)
my rig has 4.11 and a gear vendors OD. so my effective ratio will be 3.20 with a 1:1 gear.
could sell both trannies and get a NP435 and use that with your GV unit. Then you have the advantages of a manual and a granny low, without lugging the engine with a double overdrive geartrain. A gear calcualtor would really help you figure out what rpm youll do at 60 and 70 mph.
Could sell everything and get a ZF 5 speed. Best of the manuals.
I personally will do the shifting myself for as long as i am physically capable. The gas mileage, performance, and freedom of a manual really appeal to me. But i dont do lots of heavily-loaded starting and slow-speed movement (the 300s forte), such as launching a boat or pulling a tree stump. If you do alot of that with your truck than a clutch probably wont last too long. even with a granny first.
well this thing will be my reliable daily driver, just cruisin around town and going to the lake very now and then with a boat. I think the 4.11 (maybe deeper if i get an OD trans like the zf) would be good for around town and moderate towing. never thought if an NP435, might look into that.
the 435 doesnt have an OD gear. 4th is a decent compromise for the 45mph speed limited roadways and the 70+ itnerstates. I have 3.55s. 4.11s would pretty much rule out going over 60. With the GV though, you might do ok.
definitely get a gear calculator. I have a nice, big excel worksheet that i got from another forum. You can plug in two entirely different sets of tires, gears, and rear ends and compare them. Its very nice for comparing a simple change in rear ends, all the way to completely different trannies (like youre considering). i would recommend getting something similar.
right, im using the novak conversion calculator, works pretty good. what is the OD on a zf5? .78? .70? i might use the NP 435 or that light duty one (still lost on the name) if the zf if out of my price range at a junkyard.
so i did the math on the overdrive of that clark 3spdOD. (found the name ) .70*.78 (GV overdrive) is .54. with 32"tires, goin 75 mph and with a 4.11 ratio, my rpm will be around 1700-1800 rpm. now is that considered lugging the 300 or is that around where i want to be?
My 300....I shift into OD at 45 mph which is 1200 rpm, so that's your bottom rpm range. I cruise at 60 and 1600 rpm giving me 20 mpg, that's enough rpm to climb modest grades. 1750 would be better of course. Driving 75 is far from optimal for fuel mileage.
so i did the math on the overdrive of that clark 3spdOD. HUH?? (found the name ) .70*.78 (GV overdrive) is .54. with 32"tires, goin 75 mph and with a 4.11 ratio, my rpm will be around 1700-1800 rpm. now is that considered lugging the 300 or is that around where i want to be?
Where did you find that Clark made a 3 speed overdrive, and installed it in F100/150's?
There is no such thing.
The only so-called "3" speed O/D transmission used in late 1970's, 1980's F100/150's is the Ford RUG TS-OD single rail 4 speed overdrive, which was designed by FoMoCo & Borg-Warner.
