6-speed
The seems to never pick the right gear when accelerating and when decelerating. It fumbles between 1, 2, and 3 all the time. It has taken ford multiple times to just get the fumbling to no do it so often.
If you guys are looking for an efficient 6 speed I would look elsewhere.

I hope the reason they are delaying this release is so they can work out some bugs.
Why would anyone jump right in and buy one of these new F150's before they even hit the lots especially considering they are paying full retail? I would of waited a few months for the major rebates that will be coming.
How can it be underpowered, when it moves my 6,000 lb truck around just fine, and even moves 15,000 lbs combined, with my trailer...just fine.
Underpowered???

Go buy your Ram, and then bug these folks:

If only SCT would get there act together and make a programmer for the 07 and newer expeditions. I am pretty sure that I could get a custom tune that would allow my 5.4L and 6 speed transmission to operate more efficiently.
I'm no Ford troll, here...I think Ford makes a great product, but if it comes to a point where another manufacturer makes a product that better suits my needs, I'd buy it! I'm gonna go against what many say here, as I think ALL of the major automakers make great trucks...
I just get frustrated when people bash something they know nothing about...I've towed heavier things with my 5.4 than most have here, and have always been impressed with how well it did. Calling it "underpowered" kind of makes me think it's posted by a 17 year old, testosterone-crazed kid out for bragging rights.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Dodge gave up a lot of capability. The Dodge was dead last in capaility before the 2009 F-150 came out and Dodge didn't do any changes. They are still dead last.
This is why this is one of the worst F-150 forums. You can't talk about anything without a bunch of people ignorantly complaining about everything Ford. The OP didn't even know Dodge had a five speed. And now all the trolls are saying Ford's 6 speed is junk. What a joke.

I towed my 5500lb boat close to 3,000 mi this summer, what a dream. I also tow in the Rocky Mtns, the 6-speed wakes up this engine.
I even pulled 15.5 mpg this year accross Wolf Creek Pass on my way to Denver, pulling my 5500 lb boat!
I know Carbon has had many problems with his tranny, but mine has been flawless! I would guess that I have 6,000 miles towing out of 14,000 miles total on my Expedition, without a hick-up.....
I am sure the new 09 F-150 will be even better...
What makes it worse is when ignorance shows its ugly face in the person that thinks a ford has ZERO problems, and everything about them is peachy keen, when sometimes, with some things, it isnt.
Talking about fords bad things is even more important then talking about the good things. The bad things always show up!
Also, a guy with 250ish posts is going to be less likely a troll then 15ish posts, something to ponder.

The dodge 5 speed has 3 planetary gear sets, 6 actual speeds, but it has two second gear ratios like it was said, one for downshifts and another for upshifts.
The new 6 speed dodge behind the cummins is based on the 5 speed, it still has 3 planetary gear sets, but the gear ratios have been reworked to be more diesel engine friendly. It no longer has the two different 2nd gear ratios however.
The Ford 6R transmission also has 3 Gearsets. One nice thing about it the R6 is that it has a massively low 1st gear, around 4.17:1 which should be great for off the line acceleration and towing a trailer. Shall be interesting to see how it works out in the new F-150

5.4 underpowered... hmmm... well everyones got an opinion. I drive a 4.2L powered truck and I dont think its underpowered. Its not going to blow you away with power but it gets me around just fine. I dont pull anything ever with my truck or else I'd need more. But for hauling a cubic yard of dirt, or gravel, lumber, or some off roading around the farms, it does just fine. My cousins 5.4 happens to reside in a 2000 super duty (over 7,000 lbs, and only the 2V motor) and with 3.73's he pulls a big goosneck and tractors all over the place. Sure he wants a PSD but the 5.4 does just fine. And thats through the hills outside of Carrollton Ohio... not a very flat area. now underpowered would be one of the guys that works on the farm with a 80's F150 with a 4.9L that pulls a cattle trailer... that thing does barely make it up the hills, and its probably way over the rated weight for that truck. but he doesnt care and other than doing about 10mph up hill, he has no problems with it or interest in getting a new truck.
