Last Wednesday one of the cats I rescued figured out that he can pop my screens out of place and three of my cats got out(only thought it was two) and my little buddy bearcat got out and we can't catch him. We have a Have A Hart trap set up with food in it but he is to smart for it(caught another stray twice) he is very skittish and won't come to us,it is really worrying my wife as he has been a inside cat since he was 6 weeks old.Yesterday my brother came over and we had him trapped under a shed and I was sure we had him but later found out that cats can dig as good as a dog and he was loose again. I have tryed to bait him with can cat food, tuna and a laserpointer that he loves to play with. We have had nothing but rain and storms the last couple of days and that didn't help calm him. I also put a bunch of cat nip near the trap still nothing. Anybody have this happen and if so what worked to get them trapped. Please no cat haters reply!
I agree with Stu. A scared animal generally will not approach a human. Male cats like to roam and mine would disappear for 2 or 3 days at a time.
He'll get hungry and (hopefully) come back so leave a can of tuna by an open window and see if that draws him back to the house. It takes a lot of time for a cat to get comfortable enough to approach so you'll have to be alone, very patient and calm to get him to approach you. He's smart enough to avoid traps!
The more you try to catch him the more wary he'll get! Good luck and I hope you get him back soon.
I tryed that first but he is just being a typical cat and ignoring us and we are afraid he is going to run out in the road and get hit by a car,I also figured he would get hungry enough to go in the trap but that hasn't worked either.
I've had this kind of trouble catching my sister's dog before. My opinion on this has always been, if it takes this much trouble to get the animal inside your home, is it really that much of a pet anyway? It's hard to change nature's course.
That's just my opinion though, I realize it doesn't help you at all. I realize the cat just doesn't know better, especially if it hasn't been outdoors before. Just letting you know that I know how frustrating the situation is. Is there a local Animal Control that can help you out? How much land are we talking about?
you prolly need more than one trap animal control may be able to lend you some but i tend to agree if an animal is stupid enough to run away from food and shelter let it go
Thanks guys I figured I would not wast the time to reply being he probably can't read anyway,I just spotted Bear for the first time today and I will leave him be for now he has got to get hungry soon probably living on bugs and other small creatures of the night. When he is in the house he will come to me when ever I call him as he has claimed me as his LOL I would feel better if I could get the little goofball back in.
You have tried everything that I have done before and my cat did the same, so I got told to get some cavier or some shrimp and leave in the trap. I did it and it work after 3 days. You might have to do this a couple times a day. Also put one of him favorite toys in the trap also.
Well I have fresh tuna in the trap and changed it a couple of times, tonite I have been watching him out the windows and he is very hungy he tryed to climb a tree after a bird but missed and he is scowering the yard eating crickets and keeps going to the trap trying to figure out how to get the tuna without going in,stubborn little ******* lol.I did try his favorite toy a laser pointer and he showed no intrest but inside he would stick to it like glue,I left my garage door open with a blanket that he likes to sleep on in there if I can get him used to the garage I will leave the door open less and less until I can close it behind him.
