my friend ps went out on his 04 nissan maxima...the belt and fluid level is good...when i take the cap off the reservoir it is churning so i guess the pump is working...the steering works a little bit and then gets hard every quarter turn of the steering wheel...im going to say that the rack is bad...the rack is $1100 and the pump is $500...what are symptoms of a bad rack?
I would start by checking the steering column u-joints. If it has any... They can be hidden anywhere. The crappy part about it is sometimes you can't really check them unless you get the steering column out.
But I could be way off, your friend's car might not even have u-joints in his steering column.

Nissan Maxima = Torque Steer personified.
It's the rack itself, as it has developed highspots on it. Turn the wheel, it binds up when the high spots are reached.
This is the same malady that affects the spool valve in the 1965 and later Ford P/S gearboxes. Cars got this gearbox in 1965, F100/350's in midyear 1969, 4WD's in late 1977.
it was the u-joint...took the whole rack out, worked fine...took u joint assembly out and only half of it moved freely, the other half was fubbed up...hard as hell to move
too bad i disconnected the coupler last, i might have caught the problem earlier...it could have been worse and installed the new rack and still had the same problem
