fuel gage sensor?

fuel gage sensor?

hi i just bought a 85 f-150 and found out the fuel gage doesnt work, is it a sensor? can anyone tell me how to fix this?

No sensor. It has a float that sends the signal via what SHOULD be a yellow wire. Check the ohms at your gauge or the float itself.

Chronic Ford truck problem...live with it, fill up using the miles driven on the odometer. If dual tanks, you always have a spare tankful.

Take the wire off the sending unit, and with the key in run and someone watching the fuel gauge, ground the wire. The gauge should swing full scale in one direction. Then take the wire off ground and let it touch nothing. The gauge should swing full scale the opposite direction. If this works, then the wiring and the gauge are ok, and there is something wrong with the sending unit inside the fuel tank. I believe the other poster is correct, the wire is going to be yellow/blue or blue/yellow.

thanks for the help! ill check the wireing first to see if thats the problem.
