4WD not engaging with electronic shift
I own a 1993, F-150 4x4 w/5.0L V-8, electronic shift 4WD with automatic locking hubs.
When the "4wd high" button on the dash is pushed there is a clicking noise coming from the but the electronic control shift module area but the 4wd will not engage.
After researching the diagnosis, I believe it could be the "electric shift motor" mounted to the transfer case has gone bad.
Do you have any ideas why the truck is not engaging into 4WD?
Usually this is caused by a lack of use. I have the same problem with my 88 Bronco, usually on the first snow.
The fix: Get a rubber or plastic mallet. Have some else push the button, at that time give the gearcase on the shift motor a light but firm rap. You don't want to break it, just give it a shock as it is trying to shift. You may need to try this several times. Mine took about 3-4 shots yesterday. Once you get it to shift in, keep shifting it. I mean shift it 20-30 times, until it goes in AND out with one push of the button.
I don't know the exact problem but I believe that it is corrosion on the contacts. I would try this first, because the shift motors are not very cheap.
If this works, find a dirt road once a month and shift it several times. It may just prevent it in the future.
my 92 bronco is stuck in 4 low and 4x4, push the buttons and no click, the indicator lights on the switches are on, checked the fuses inside the truck and everything allright, there are other fuses and relays in the engine compartment, anyone know if theres one thre for the electric shift issue, or any other ideas?
yes there is a power distribution box on the drivers side next to the airbox.....there is actually more than one if i remember correctly!
and yes the motors go bad...i took mine to ford to have it fixed something like $200 for a new one!
but i never had another problem with it again! just make sure to use it once a month or so when you get it fixed!-jason-
