Found some bad news. I pulled the 2 rear connecting rod caps and bearings off and found the tops wiped to the copper and both scored. The journals that I have seen are not scored. The shine varies across the journal but I can not see or feel any scratches. I pulled a cap off one other connecting rod and found it scored but not as bad. This motor only has 5000 miles on it (a lot in the mud and in the dunes). I got it from a guy who had rebuilt but never installed it but decided to sell it to work on a mopar motor. What's the prognosis? Does this mean the motor is trashed? If the rest of journals are ok on the main and connecting rods does it makes sense to replace the lower end bearing and give it a try? The cylinder walls look good from the lower end. No sign of scuffing and scoring but is it likely that the cam bearing are trashed too? Here is a pic of a couple of the bearings:
The overlay wearing off looks like a poorly installed or even wrong sized bearing. . .and the scoring looks like the block wasn't properly cleaned before reassembly.
And you say the guy built himself, so I'm not that surprised.
If there is grit in your oiling system, all of your bearings are probably trashed. You might be able to get away with having the block cleaned, and chasing all of your oil galleys with a bottle brush along with you're crank oil passages. Have the journals polished and reassemble with new bearings. Maybe a new oil pump. . .
Maybe a seasoned engine builder will step in and give a better answer though, I'm just shade-tree
