New brake booster question

Hi,
I just put in a new A1 Cardone brake booster on my 89 F-150 300-6. The installation went very smooth no problem. When I press the pedal now I still hear a small hiss sound when I press the pedal and stops as soon as I let off the pedal. Before the original booster went bad I don't remember this? Any ideas? I'm hoping that the new Booster is not defective? The installation was fun but not real fun! Thanks!

Hi QL2,
Yes I did, but it is labeled as a replacement OEM? I guess it is original FORD rebuilt by Cardone. I just performed about 4 test, that I found on another site and everything test out "normal". I'm thinking now that it is good to go and that a small slight "air" noise is normal. It test good anyway and the consenses is that these are hardly ever bad out of the box? Thanks!

i had a slight air noise on my f150 when i got it.

never bothered me until i was at freeway speed and it made the idle speed up when i taped the brakes.

replaced with a quality replacement from napa and now no noise at anytime.

warned you not to go to autozone.

gave many reasons and suggestions to get quality part.

don't know what else we could have done to help you make a better decision.

Hi,
Well... I did make an informed decision and believe me NAPA has problems also! If you don't beleive that go down there today and hang out and watch people returning things! The A1 Cardone unit is one of the leading brake booster rebuilders in the USA! If I went to NAPA and bought the same unit for $15 dollars more does that make it better? I could of maybe bought an original FORD for $200 but thats a waste of money in my position. As I said I believe the unit is good, it tests out that way anyway! Thanks!

get it up to freeway speeds and then tell me all is alright.

you asked in another post if you should go to autozone and we almost all said not to and by saving 15 dollars you may have to do the job again is all i am saying.

good luck in your future repairs.

Hi QL2,
Thanks for the good wishes,I'll play along here. I just called NAPA. They carry the Cardone! Same unit but I was wrong on price. They want $20 dollars more for the same unit and charge $35 core charge instead of $15! So I will repeat myself, whats the diff??? Except money! I'm going to run the truck in a few minutes and will look for any problems at highway speed! Thanks!

Hi,
Well, I went for a ride and everything runs smooth. I even went on the cruise control to see if there was any problems there. Everything works fine except the air sound when the brakes are applied. If I can't get some feed back on this, I will probably replace the unit Monday with another one. I might call a tech at Cardone and ask them if this is normal. It's their rebuild job anyway!

Hi Jr.,
Thanks for the reply and info! I'm trying to figure out whats going on with this booster. It holds pressure,ect.,ect. I've done about 4 test and everything shows "normal operation",the only thing is it makes a small noise like air escaping, but works fine? I don't know??? I might bleed the brakes tomorrow and get the brake pedal as hard as I can get it and see what I think. The real kicker would be to replace this brand new one with another unit and it still act the same way!!! Thanks again!

Any chance that gromet like connector that the Vac hose connects to booster with is unable to maintain seal when subjected to booster function. Or maybe the internal check valve inside it is hanging up & not closing off compleatly. Either senario could account for the noise when brake is applied.

Hi,
Internal check valves I can't really deal with. That is why the booster was rebuilt in the first place. The "grommet" that you speak of IS a check valve to maintain vacumn in the booster and work on a pressure differental principal. It is brand new like the rest of the unit. I don't know? You are right, it sounds like it's not sealing somewhere, but it works great? Dosen't make any sense to me! Thanks!

Hi,
To put a cap on this and maybe help someone dealing with the same problem in the future. I took the new A1 Cardone brake booster back off. I couldn't stand the noise and I did pay for a new unit and figured it should act like one. Went back to Autozone, got another one and it worked fine, no sound what so ever! Oh yea, the second time is easier than the first!!!
