Assuming you have the Dana 44 independent up front, which is the stock axle for your 91 f-150 4x4, your going to have problems changing to a ratio in the mid 4's. The 44 has two different height carriers available, often called carrier break, one for ratios numerically lower than 3.73 and one for ratios numerically higher than 3.92. This is because the pinion gear gets smaller as you go to a lower gear (numerically higher of course) and it simply won't reach the ring gear. Since your truck came with 3.55s you are either going to have to buy the appropriate carrier or try to find a thicker ring gear if you want a ratio like 4.56. If changing the carrier is what you decide to do in order to get the gears you want then this is a good time to purchase a full carrier replacement locker or limited slip, if you've been wanting one. However, there is no carrier break on your 8.8 axle, so changing ratio's won't be a problem for the rear.
