Okay, this problem is really starting to get to me. For the last couple weeks, every once in a couple dozen starts, my 1995 F-150 will just keep cranking the starter even after I've returned the key to the run, or even the off position.
I've got to pop the hood, run to the battery and disconnect the positive. After letting the truck sit for a few minutes, I can re-connect the battery and everything works like normal. But yesterday, I was driving down the highway and the starter just started cranking for no reason! Scared the crap out of me as I pulled over and screeched to a halt then disconnected the battery again.
So is my likely problem the solenoid, starter relay, or the ignition (key) cylinder itself? Or is there a part of system that I'm not even thinking of yet? I really could use a point in the right direction.
The next time it happens, pull one of the small wires off the solenoid. Check it out so you will be prepared, but it should be a red/blue wire.
If pulling the red/blue wire off does not stop the cranking, then the problem is going to be the solenoid itself.
If pulling the red/blue does stop the cranking, then the problem is going to be the wiring around the neutral safety switch(there is a hot wire to the backup lights that is bundled with the red/blue start wire) or an ignition switch problem.
It hasn't happened again yet, but your question illuminated the issue somewhat. Does the fact that the truck started cranking the starter while I was in Drive on the highway illustrate the fact that the Neutral Safety Switch is indeed the issue?
I think you might check you ignition switch on your steering coloum or for some worn wires their aswell it might also be a week seliod and could be arking out if you hit a bump. Not good if it is starting when your drivig could bust your stater or take the teeth off your ring gear.
