I am noticing since I last cleaned my truck, some wierd white-ish stuff showing up on the edge of my alloy rims. Almost a dried glue/bird crap looking, but I cannot get it off. The stuff is an off-white color... It's not all over the place on the rims, just a few select areas - just around the edge from where the tire meets the rim. Dried, hard glue is the best way to describe the texture. I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is. And why all 4 tires? I can see if I drove through something, maybe on a tire or two, but all 4? I just got this truck, and it had brand new Pirellis on it. (20" ATR). ?????
Thanks,
Steve
Without seeing the wheels, it sounds like a clearcoat issue. Either the clearcoat is flaking off and/or it's already off and the aluminum?? is oxidizing.
It is probably the oxidation of the aluminum under the clear coat because the white hard crap is oxidized aluminum. Good news is that once there the oxidation never goes deeper just stays on the surface, but it looks like crap. Polishing the rim and recoating with a quality clear coat will fix it, but because you will change out tires, that clear coat will get scratched off again.
I just showed the pics to the dealership... Corrosion. I live in Maine and it is quite common. Our guess is it was not as obvious when I first got the truck because they cleaned it up real nice prepping it for sale. No more standard warranty. My dealer suggested that I use a very fine steel wool and rub it down, then apply something called 'Mother's Polish' to it.
