Guys, I need some help. I have a 98 F-150 with the 4.6L V8. The engine began to ping while under a heavy load with 60,000 on the odometer. Also, when the engine is between 2200 and 2500 rpm's there's a whistling/moaning sound audible from the interior of the truck which sounds like it's coming from the area around the passenger side floor vent. Now, at 62,000 miles, the engine pings badly upon cold starts for a couple of seconds and then goes away. If I run 93 octane in the truck the engine does not ping under load but the other problems persist. Any ideas here? Thanks for any help.
Don: Try disconnecting the positive battery cable overnight to attempt to reset the ECU. Sounds like the ECU has somehow lost its memory. The ping is a timing problem. Timing is controlled by the ECU. Make sure that you have regular fuel in your truck the day before you disconnect the cable. The ECU should reprogram itself for the fuel in the vehicle at the time of reconnect, after about 10 heat-up and cool-down cycles. I am not sure what the noise is, without being able to listen to it. Hope it helps, let me know.
Thanks
Danny
I've had my 97 E150 in ford garage on 2 occasions to adjust spray nozzles to spray up onto windshield. Was told that there was no adjustment to be made so what they did was replace nozzles and spray pattern is still onto lower part of glass and not effective. Anyone have any smarts on this??(this work done while in warranty)
get a small pin or needle like a straight pin a woman uses in sewing.
Find one sprayer on your hood. Stick the pin in the opening of the sprayer and see if it moves arround. When it moves, just move it so the hole is pointed more up towards the top of the windshield.
Then go try the sprayer out and see how its directed. If not correct then move it some more.
Then go to the other side of the hood and repeat for the other side.
Hey - post me back here to let me know if it worked for your.
I am really disappointed with my 97 E150 conversion van because of roaring engine noise. Have 5.4 V8, 3.55 axle &Std 235/75R-15 tires. underhood inspection found a little fan blade shrouded low on radiator(where I think roar originates) any Ideas how to reduce noise?
I would suspect carbon buildup in the cumbustion chambers. A dirty MAF sensor could contribute. Cleaning is simple. A faulty EGR system could also cause it but it should set a code. Have the engine de-carbonized if cleaning the MAF doesn't help.
