i dont think the 5.8l/ 4R70W combo was ever available, but the 5.8l and AODE combo was available. the 2 transmissions are the same, so i would assume that the 28oz flex plate for the AODE/5.8l combo would work. am i to assume right?

The 4R70W and the AODE are basically the same. The AODE was only used in cars as far as I know. The 4R70W had a little wider ratio (the "W") then the AODE and it had a different output shaft.
just spoke with ford racing and they said the 4R70W and aod aode all use they same flex plate. new from ford racing they are $64.00, shouldnt have a problem finding one at the junk yard either. ill see what the cost is and see if it worth getting one used.

I did not know that they ever put a 4R70W or an AODE behind a 5.8L. I bet that would be hard to find.
Just about every 5.8L I have seen either had a C6 or a E4OD behind them.
I do have an AOD behind a 5.8L in one of my trucks but I put it there and it did not come stock that way. I think some of the late 80's may have had AOD's behind the 5.8L but not sure.
cops ran 351s. cops ran aods. so we know the combo exists.
as long as the flex plate has the correct imbalance factor for the engine (meaning modified, many SBF cranks balance at 50oz), the correct tooth count (hence overall diameter) and correct offset, you be golden. E40D was only an option behind the 351. AODs exist (friend has one, 87 Bronco, 351, AOD - for sale even)
Trucks used the AODE before the 4R70W came into use.
I can not find anything to back this up.
In 1993 only the Trucks had a transmission they called the 4R70W/AODE-W code "U" but this was not the AODE per say.
