Has anyone installed the timer device to shutdown the engine and cool off the turbo on a 05 6.0L. Just wondering what is involved to install it and does it work without any problems? My friend has an 08 and I understand they have a pump that runs for 10 minutes to cool the turbo after shutdown. After towing at hiway speeds I would like to let the engine cool down but it isn't always convenient to do so. I would like to hear from anyone who has installed one of these devices and what you think of it.
yeah i have a viper one and think its pretty cool. remote start, alarm pager, turbo timer all in one. i have it set for 3 mins and use it most of the time so i don't have to sit in my truck and watch the EGT gauge drop.
I've had them on sports cars and they were pretty easy to install you just hooked them up to the ignition. There is plenty of wiring diagrams on here to help you out just search for them. My .02 though you are better off just sitting in the truck and waiting for the egt's to go down. Idling is pretty hard on our trucks and kills the mileage and it is nearly impossible to set a turbo timer to be perfect for the cool down varying on outside temp, load conditions, and whether you have the ac on/off.
Where did you get yours installed and what would I be expected to pay for that alarm. I would like to add one to my truck, I am alittle hesitant I have heard some horror stories on remote starts on these trucks. But I would like the added Timer and anti-theft of the Viper system.

I'm on the other side of the country as you (cali) and got mine installed at Off Shore Audio in Long Beach, Ca. Its a Audio, Tint, Detail place that do a lot of high end stuff. I got the Viper 791 when it first came out so it was full price and then installed at a high labor rate. Most likely cost me around $400 all said and done and they messed with my iPod connection too. You can get them online now for like only $175 so it won't cost you as much. They might even have a better model now idk.
o yeah and if you have it done at a shop make sure they have done it on diesels before. this place knew all about glowplugs etc. so they set it up to delay 15 every time you push the button to start to make sure the glowplugs are hot. with a bitwriter they can custom it anytime you want and said 15 sec is perfect for cold morning starts and will not harm the truck when its warmer.
Anyone out there from the Upstate area that can help me wih this. I dont know of anyone around that has this on there 6.0 If there is a shop here locally that is reputable let me know.

If you use a synthetic motor oil you do not need to cool the turbo before shutdown. Synthetic oil does not coke or burn like dino oil.
DSMMH, Thanks for the heads up on synthetic oil, I was not aware of that fact. That certainly is a plus for synthetic and would take a load off of my mine when shutting down, after many miles of towing and wanting to leave the truck without waiting for it to cool down.

A 1-3 minute idle isn't going to hurt anything. When I've been doing some hard driving or towing I'll set the turbo timer cool down to 3 minutes. This is plenty of time to let the EGTs come down regardless of outside temp. And I always shut the A/C off when I'm getting out of the truck.
