My 08 work truck f-550 is blowing smoke. We took the cat off to improve mpgs and now the check engine light is on and its blowing smoke that smells like rich fuel. any ideas?
What engine?
Removing the converter is illegal and really, removing them doesn't do much. Catalytic converters flow much better than they used to, almost like they aren't there. You just hear more exhaust noise.
Does this truck have an o2 sensor behind the cat? If so, put the cat back on and the light will go away. The "rich" smell and smoke is the pollutants you are now putting into the air instead of the converter reducing them.
There is a forum dedicated to the 6.4, maybe a mod can move this for you. I'm not too familiar with the 6.4s. How much white smoke? Is it constant or only when you stomp the throttle? Notice any power loss?
Is this truck still under warranty? If it is please stop taking potentially unnecessary and illegal stabs in the dark at fixing it. Instead, bring it in to your local Ford service center.
If the truck is out of warranty bring it to Ford anyway. Sometimes the only way to figure out these new engines is by scanning codes and possibly reflashing the ECM/PCM.

First off, Welcome to FTE Karmastruck. Second, if he's played with the exhaust system, there's a good chance it's no longer in warranty.
Scroll down further on the main forum listing page and find the section dedicated to the 6.4. You need to know if you've removed the DPF before asking down there. There's a good chance your modifications have caused the truck to go into constant regen, which means you're fuel economy is dropping off as well. I'd say you either need to put the exhaust back to stock configuration, or invest in a tuner that will help the PCM get around the regen process.
This is just a hunch,
You likely removed the particulate filter and oxidization catalytic converter. The filter scrubs the soot out of the exhaust so your truck will pollute less. When the filter fills with soot it plugs exhaust flow then engine managment goes to "regen' (raises exhaust gas temp to burn off soot). This is done by firing injectors while the exhaust valves are open.
And a whole lot more, good luck
