Gear Shift Removal

I am trying to get the shifter out of the transmission. There are two pins on the outside on the housing of the transmission. I can move one with my fingers, but cant get it to pull out. The other side I cant move. Hopefully someone can send me in the right direction.

Can you get a small screwdriver between the shifter and the pin and then move the shifter to push the pin ?

Push dwn on the cup that goes into the top of the trans around the shifter and turn it counter-clockwise about 1/4 inch. It should then release and lift out. The pins work like the pins on the side of the base of a tail light bulb and lock into notches in the cup.
I usually use a pair of channel lock pliers. Open them enough that you can push down with the side of the jaws and the teeth help you get enough grip to turn it.

You have to push down pretty hard. The spring is fairly strong.

The various Warner transmissions have a cap that screws on/off to retain the shift lever = 8MTH7228. One doesn't need one a these very often.

However...

The New Process 435 transmission uses a notched cap to retain the shift lever into the tower. The two pins are what retains the cap to the tower.

Peeps do not know that one has to press down on the cap, and then turn it a 1/4 turn to remove it.

Because peeps don't know this...most of these caps have one or both of the notches torn away, but the good news is, the cap is still available from Ford, and it's cheap.

B8T7220D .. NP435 Shift Lever Retainer Cap / MSRP: $7.59 / FTEpartsguy.com price: $4.64.

The NP435 trans must be in neutral before removing the lever.

Once you get that shift tower off, look at the 1-2 & 3-4 shift forks.

Both have 2 nylon inserts on them (1-2 inserts are dif than 3-4 inserts). When those inserts wear, or break apart, the trans cannot be shifted.

The inserts are still available from Ford as are most of the other parts like seals, gaskets, syncro blocker rings, yadda yadda yadda.

I can type all the NP 435 trans parts off the cuff, since I sold the scheiss for over 37 years!

Yup, unless it is one of the bigger heavy duty trannies that is in the bigger trucks. They usually have a lock bolt in the side of the tower that hits a detent pin inside the tower, that's spring loaded and you have to remoeve the bolt on one or both sides in order to remove the shifter. (I just found this out on my big truck transmissions, after failing to push down and turn and not figuring out why the thing wouldn't release, until i started unbolting thins and I finally found the bolt that releases the lock pin for the gear shift lever). Is it safe to assume ksmith, that you're talking about the shifter in one of your various large trucks, as opposed to the itty bitty trannies found in the much smaller and less trucky trucks? Knowing that you have a thing for the N-series trucks, I am going to assume that it is the much heavier duty stuff you are asking about. If not, then puch down and turn if it's the small trannies (oh yeah, that spring can some times still have a lot of force under it, and makes it tough to both push down and turn).

There's no lock bolt on a New Process 435 transmission, what ksmith has in his N Series.

The NP 435 was used on F100/700's, C550/700's, N500/700's, P350/500's.

If I bought the book, you guys would not be able to look like geniouses. I have oredered one, but has not arrived yet.; I don't know when it will get here. It is mostly wiring though I think. If you tell me where I can get the book, I would.

By the way if you don't like the questions just dont answer them.

Everyone knows once I start I am hell bent on getting it done. I don't have time to wait on the dam book. The shifter is out, the cab is now off. The engine will be out later tonight. The frame and wrecker body will be at the sandblasters on Saturday. I will have the engine torn down as well at least most of the way tonight. I will post pics tomorrow of my progress.

Hell I may have two done before some get finished with their first one. I may even start a third, thanks to the people on here who don't mind helping me out!

OK, you're on there kiddo...

The 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog is available from hipoparts.com on a CD.

Original used and reprinted Ford shop & owners manuals, sales brochures, and damn near everything else Ford printed, is available from faxonautolit.com.

btw: I'm not a genius or an expert, I'm just a dumb cluck that can read a parts catalog.

The wiring diagrams in the parts catalog, while complete, may be hard to see, because the CD version reduces the pics from their original 8" x 11" inch size.

It all depends on how large your pc's monitor is.

The shop manual and wiring diagrams are the way to go when looking for wiring harnesses and where they go and connect to.

This wouldn't happen if you stuck to one model range of trucks.
By the time I pop in with my book thing you usually have it stripped dipped and shipped and are on to the next one.

I own more than just old Fords, and the various cars (I call 'em "old rolling piles of misery") ain't all the same models, either.

I know 48, but like numberdummy says I have a.d.d. I have to be onto something new. I did buy two more of these style trucks though. I may sell the one but I have not totally decided yet.

I did order the books, but asking questions gives me a reason to post so I can catch up to you.
