4X4 test
Hi
I just bought a 1995 EB 4X4 explorer and I would like to know how can I test the 4x4 system? I mean, do this, feel this, you should hear this and those kind of questions.
I would like to know if there's anything missing, broken or not functioning in the 4x4 system. How do i know when to change the fluids and all that.

33 goodrich mudders
3" body
stock 3.55 gears
260-280 hp and 380-410 ft lbs of torque
all from crane camx powermax cam and lifters kit, bmk throttle body throttle body spcaer, crane cam rockers, more to come......

Crawl underneath. You should be able to turn front driveshaft by hand. It should spin freely. Start the engine. Put truck into gear. Engage transfer case(4x4 hi). Put truck in park. Kill engine. Crawl under truck again. You shouldn't be able to move driveshaft by hand. If you can, then either you did not engage the 4wd properly, or the transfer case is not engaging properly. Repeat for 4x4 low range. You should get the same results; not moveable by hand.
To check if the hubs work:
If you have auto hubs, place a piece of masking tape(or something sticky and obvious) somewhere on the front axle that should turn when the hubs lock in. Engage the transfer case and either back up or drive fowrard about 15 feet. Look under the truck. If the tape moved, then the hubs did lock in. If the tape didn't move, then either the hub did not work, or that part does not rotate when the front axle is engaged. I am not too familar with your front axle, so I cant say exactly where to place the tape. On my trucks, you can see the axles and u-joints through the steering knuckles. I can't remember if it is the same for an Explorer or not, sorry.
Hope this helps and does not confuse you even more.

Thanks to both for your time and suggestions on how to check my 4X4 system. I can hear the small "clunk" when the switch does engage and as for the maskins, I'll do the trick.

Even if the Hubs are not working. the axles will turn if the transfer case is working. you would have to drive it about 15 feet in 4x4 then jack up one side and try to turn the tire to see for sure that they locked in.
